i went to change my wifes impalas oil today and figured id just buy the delco one, first time i changed it i used fram. now the one that came on the car was the PF59 with an anti-drain back valve (wtf is that by the way?) but the one the book referenced me to was a PF61 w/o the anti-drain back valve... also changed my 4.8s oil and that was the same filter according to the book. so i bought the PF61s and used them on my truck and her car cause thats what it told me to do... basically what im trying to say is did i F up cause im thinkin that that anti-drain back valve thing was supposed to be on em

she has a 06 3.5L and my trucks a 02 4.8L

First off, Fram is one of the worst filters out there. I guess a Fram filter is better than no filter. The AC Delco is a far superior oil filter than the Fram oil filters.
I use K&N oil filters, but that's just my preference. A little on the expensive side.
You should be using the filters with the anti-drain back design, at least on the car.
The trucks from 99-02 use a long filter and the 03-07 classic trucks use the short filter. I have no idea why this change occured, but it did.

It's not going to hurt anything running the 61's on either vehicle. I usually put 46's on the LSx engines though. And 61's on the cars. GM has a few filters that come on the cars that you can't buy, I can't remember if 59 is one of them, but that could be why the book said different.

yes the 59 was on the impala and i actually was on a diesel forum and the were talkin about this topic and they said that the 59 was discontinued or something... noted i will no longer buy the fram filters im really not worried about spending the extra buck or two i kinda just wanna know if these will be ok? like should i change the filter on her car now before she drives it to much or will it be ok? same thing with my truck?

I thought that the PF59 was dis-continued? That's what I've been using since I bought a bunch a little while back. I believe that AC Delco is offering a new UPF filter for the GENIII engines (not sure if it's a 46 or what). I used to use UPF59's until they got discontinued. (The UPF is supposed to be the performance filter...I believe it has a synthetic media)

yes the 59 was discontinued which it must not have been to long ago cause like i said her car is a 06' and it had one on it... and i was refered to the 46 by other ppl to. so i should be ok with the 61s though, i am under the impression that the anti-drain back valve is just for basically when you filter is turned sideways so that you dont dry start, now i know on my truck the things straight up and down, on her car theres a very slight slant to it. i assume they will make it to the next oil change and if mine doesnt o well.. more of a reason for a 6.0 lol

THe PF59's were discontinued some time around the first of the year (2006). The PF61's took their place, and like said, the only difference is the lack of the check valve.

There's a WIX filter that is equivelant of the PF59 that I would use. It's WIX number 51522. Wix makes a damn good filter, one of the best IMO.

Why did GM switch from a long oil filter to the short filter in 03'?
Even K&N oil filter reference guide shows a part# for a long oil filter for the 99-02' LS1 engines and a part# for a short filter for the 03'-07' LS1 engines.
There must be a reason for even aftermarket oil filter manufacturers to follow this change.
I'll stick with the short filter. It's what GM recommends for mine.
