Default 8.1L build up photos.

** photos suck.. its from a cell phone**

ok so we started on this friday... but with a job and 4 and 6 year old actual work time is limited lol..

as of last night we got the cam in, spings, retainers, roller rockers, lifters, injectors, and back together and it starts! little rich though have to get hp tuners from a friend.. apparently it doesnt like 60lb injectors and 255 fuel pump lol...

Hope that firday or saturday we can start on the install of the whipple..

On a side note.. comp cams suck... they sent me "there" push rods, that are listed on there web page and that they tell are made for the 8.1L... Yep they are not.. the stock ones are thickers, and half inch longer.. So i called and the guy was a smart ***.. apparetnly they think the push rods are suppse to stay inside the head. I guess its some david coperfield stuff..

what's the history on this build . . . is it a rebuild, or just a cam swap . . . or did this end up in a 1/2 ton ?

no its a 01 suburban 2500 4x4 that been abused and keep living lol...

Its the comp cam xr270 that all the guys that dont use ryler are using.. it doesnt sound as good as your set up though .

Today i only got about 2 hours to work on it, barrowed friends hp tuners, and changed the injectors size from 29 to 60... air fuel ratio went from 9.1 to 12.5... so its safe for now. we just fired it to make sure there was no issues before the whipple goes on top.

i did manage to get the alternator relocated, the water pump, and pully set up on. also did a little work on the wiring.. tomarrow im going to have to see if i can get the thermastat neck cut down and welded.. apparently the guy i got the kit from got confused and kept the whipple one.. i called whipple and he said " oh that been out of stock for 4 years"

ive got another photo ill post up and new video clip... you think i would remember to take a real camera with me lol..

sound good keep us informed I would like to see how the engine likes that cam with and without the supercharger. I was thinking about uping my cam from the raylar 103 to a custom grind from comp cams. I just don't know how big I want to go.

If i had done my home work i would have had a custsom cam done as well... They seem to rate the cams different now than they use to, or at least comp does. off the top of my head i think its 510 510, then like 214? on a 114 center. It made a huge differece, just in the way the throttle responds.. You use to be able to revve it in park or netural and it was just a slow revve.. not it jumps remineds me of a old muscle car when you just crak the throttle once how the hole car shakes...

I know its not going to be a race car by any means, but a supercharger and cam are going to have to make some what quicker, or it will just have stupid torque lol.. Stock the trun 17.XX @ like 80 i think... Id love to see it drop into the 13's but that asking for a lot.. if i can get it go say low to mid 14's ill be happy for 8200 lb suv... our old porsche cayenne turbo ran 14's all day long... when the weather was cold you could get in the mid 13"s....

Smile Good Advice

Had a little time to check in here on the forum today and search 8.1L

Notice that some of you guys have a little trouble some times getting parts right for your 8.1L engine for upgrades and sometimes technical help on this engine at other manufacturers is lacking and misinformed.

I don't say this to be snooty or bragging but I have forgotten more about the 8.1L engine than just about anybody in the industry knows, so when I have time or can help please email me at tech@raylar engine.com and I will try to help and keep you out of potential problems if I can.

As for camshafts for the 8.1L just remember that the 8.1L is very different than any other chevy big block, its long stroke and long rod in its tall deck block make needed and optimum valve event timing much different and not comparable to other short stroke -short deck big blocks like the 454 and 502this is due to piston speeds and piston dwell times which is to complicated to get into a great bit of detail here. Just keep in mind that when you order camshafts especially custom grinds you need to know this kind of technical cam event timing info or you're going to get a camshaft that won't optimize what you are trying to do.
Raylar has spent years, thousands of dollars and a lot of on dyno and in vehicle testing to get camshafts and parts for the 8.1l engine right!
Just to let you know the stock GM pistons in the 8.1L engine have very small intake valve pocket relief and the wrong choice on intake lift and valve event timing can leave you with a pile of junk 8.1L engine parts.
Just a Word to the wise , be careful putting custom ground cams in your 8.1L unless you or someone you have making the cams knows the 8.1L and what they are doing.

Obvoiusly Raylar has just about any part or system you need to make more power in an 8.1L and yes our parts aren't cheap, good quality parts never are.

I attached some pictures of our heads just to show what quality engineering and development can make.

Best Regards,
Ray @ Raylar

If your truck truely is 8600lbs, then a 13 second pass may be tough. Mine weighs in at about 7000lbs (give or take) and my best is a 13.43 but it will run consistant 13.6x's.

Nice to see Ray stopping in......would live to see some pics or data of some truck builds Ray. What do you have in the way of super charger cams for stock trucks?
