4L80E transmission fluid type??
What kind of fluid are you guys using?? I have a 80e out of a 2005. Nothing special, just has a hd2 shift kit and circle d converter. The whole system is new and from what I've read it will take 14qts to fill. I just dont know what kind to use. Thanks!!!

Dexron VI replaces Dexron/Mercon III and is fully compatible with applications calling for Dex-III, like the 4L80-E. Don't put any old-school additives in it. The fluid has all the modifiers and detergents required. Brand isn't important, all products licensed and sold as "Dexron-VI" have to meet the spec.

Bump!
I found some old threads on people using Type F or a mixture of Dexron III and Type F in 4L60E's. Anyone use Type F lately?
I was thinking about using it in my 80E to help it last a little longer(not even on the road yet, lol). From what I've seen the shift-kit'ed stock 80E's that fail usually have some burnt up clutches. So wouldn't Type F help prevent them from slipping and burning up?

Stick with the Dexron fluid.
There is much more than what meets the eye when talking about shift kits and burned clutches. Setting up the hydraulic circuits and accumulation in an automatic is just one part of the "recipe" when it comes to keep a transmission alive.

I prefer non-synthetic Dex III type fluid.
Type F is old school fluid designed for transmissions with brass friction elements. These haven't been used for decades.
It doesn't have as high of a temp rating as Dexron.
Tractor hyd/trans fluid works well in some applications as well, but generally is not needed.

Seems like the common GM automatics do best with the non-synthetic GM DexIII...that's what Vince told me to run in my FLT Level7 65E that he built, and Gilbert and Jake just confirmed it above. All of these guys are the best in the business, so I'd take their recommendations as the gospel
